Riad or Hotel in Marrakech: Which One Is Right for You?
One of the first decisions when planning a trip to Marrakech is where to sleep: in a traditional riad in the Medina, or in a hotel in the newer parts of the city? Both are great choices – they simply offer a different experience.
What is a riad?
A riad is a traditional Moroccan house built around an inner courtyard or garden. From the street you often see only a simple door; inside, the rooms open onto a calm patio, sometimes with a fountain, plants or a small plunge pool. Many riads have a roof terrace where breakfast is served. Most have a small number of rooms, which gives them a personal, quiet atmosphere.
Why choose a riad
- Atmosphere: traditional architecture, tiles and carved wood – an experience you won’t find in a standard hotel.
- Location: most riads are inside the Medina, often within walking distance of Jemaa el-Fnaa square and the souks.
- Personal service: with only a few rooms, hosts often help with directions, taxis and day trips.
Things to know about riads
- Many Medina lanes are pedestrian, so cars and taxis can’t always reach the door. Ask the riad where the nearest drop-off point is – many will meet you there.
- Traditional houses often have steep staircases and no lift. Ask about room location if stairs are a concern.
- Rooms open onto the courtyard, so sounds can travel. Light sleepers may prefer a room away from the patio.
Why choose a hotel
Hotels in Gueliz and Hivernage – the modern districts of Marrakech – usually offer more facilities: larger rooms, swimming pools, restaurants and easy access by car and taxi. Resorts in the Palmeraie, just outside the city, offer space and gardens away from the bustle. Hotels are often the easier choice for families with young children, travellers with a lot of luggage, and anyone who prefers lifts and modern comforts.
Which one should you choose?
- First trip, short city break, love of culture: a riad in the Medina puts you right in the heart of Marrakech.
- Family holiday, pool days, easy parking: a hotel in Gueliz, Hivernage or the Palmeraie.
- Best of both: some travellers spend a few nights in a riad and then move to a hotel with a pool.
