A Road Trip from Marrakech: Atlas Mountains, Essaouira and Ouarzazate
Marrakech is the perfect starting point for a road trip. Within a few hours you can be in the mountains, by the ocean or at the gateway to the desert. Here are three classic routes – each can be a day trip or the start of a longer journey.
1. Into the High Atlas
South of Marrakech, the High Atlas mountains rise quickly from the plain. The Ourika Valley is a popular day trip, with villages, rivers and walking paths. Further along, Imlil is the base for hikes towards Jebel Toubkal, the highest mountain in North Africa. Mountain roads are winding, so take your time and enjoy the views.
2. West to Essaouira
Essaouira, on the Atlantic coast, is known for its whitewashed medina – a UNESCO World Heritage site – its fishing port, ramparts and steady ocean breeze. The drive from Marrakech crosses open countryside and argan tree landscapes. Many travellers stay a night or two to enjoy the seafood, the beach and the relaxed pace.
3. Over the Tizi n’Tichka pass to Ouarzazate
The road towards Ouarzazate climbs over the Tizi n’Tichka pass, one of the highest road passes in Morocco, with spectacular mountain scenery. On the other side, Aït Benhaddou – a fortified village of earthen buildings and another UNESCO World Heritage site – is a highlight. Ouarzazate itself is a gateway to the valleys and the desert regions further south.
Tips for your road trip
- Choose the right car: a standard car is fine for the main roads; for more remote tracks, ask the agency for advice.
- Plan your stops: mountain distances take longer than they look on the map. Plan to arrive before dark.
- Fuel and cash: fill up in larger towns and keep some cash for small villages.
- Weather: mountain passes can be cold, and in winter snow is possible at high altitude – check conditions before you go.
- One-way trips: if you want to return the car in another city, ask your agency about one-way rentals.
