Renting a Car in Morocco: What You Need to Know
A rental car is one of the best ways to discover Morocco. You can leave the big cities whenever you like, stop in small villages, and reach mountains, beaches and desert landscapes at your own pace. This guide explains what to check before you book and what to expect on the road.
Where to pick up your car
Most travellers collect their car at the airport when they land – for example at Marrakech Menara, Casablanca Mohammed V, Agadir Al Massira, Fes–Saïss or Tangier Ibn Battuta. Many agencies also deliver to your hotel or riad, or let you pick up the car in the city centre. If you plan to start in one city and finish in another, ask the agency about a one-way rental before you book.
What to check before you book
- Driving licence: ask the agency whether your licence is accepted as it is or whether you also need an International Driving Permit. Requirements can differ by agency and by the country that issued your licence.
- Age and experience: some agencies ask for a minimum age or a minimum number of years with a licence, especially for larger or premium cars.
- Deposit: most agencies ask for a deposit. Ask how much it is, how it is paid and when you get it back.
- Insurance: check what is covered, what is excluded and whether you can add extra cover.
- Mileage: find out whether mileage is unlimited or limited per day – important for long road trips.
- Fuel policy: a full-to-full policy is the simplest: you get the car with a full tank and return it full.
- Extras: child seats, GPS or an additional driver are often available – ask before you arrive.
Choosing the right car
A small economy car is easy to park and perfect for city driving and short trips. For families and luggage, a family car or SUV gives more space. If you plan to drive into the mountains or on unpaved tracks, ask the agency which car they recommend – a 4×4 is not needed for most main roads, but it can make remote routes more comfortable.
Driving in Morocco: practical tips
- Traffic drives on the right.
- Major cities are linked by toll motorways, which are usually the fastest and most comfortable way to cover long distances.
- Speed checks and police checkpoints are common, so follow the posted limits and keep your licence and the car documents with you.
- City traffic in Casablanca, Marrakech and other large cities can be busy, with scooters, taxis and pedestrians everywhere – drive calmly and allow extra time.
- On mountain roads, take breaks, avoid driving tired and plan to arrive before dark where possible.
- In old medinas, streets are often too narrow for cars. Park outside and walk – your riad can tell you the nearest parking.
Before you drive away
Walk around the car with the agency and note any existing scratches or dents, check the fuel level, and keep the agency’s phone number handy. Agree on the exact return time and place.
